Senegal and Ecuador put on a show, Image: Getty Images
And this is where the plot thickens. Over the next four days teams will move on, teams will hit sword and drama rises to 11. I’m here to be your space coyote for that!
game of the day
Ecuador – Senegal 1 – 2
As US fans learned the hardest, in a game where one team just needs a draw and the other needs a win, for storytelling purposes it’s better if the team that needs to win scores first. Because that’s when a single goal can swing the emotions completely the other way and back again, and the team in the lead now have to find the balance between defending and looking for a second win.
Senegal scored the first goal, and deservedly so, when Ismaila Sarr was fouled and then buried the penalty. Senegal had Ecuador under their thumb the entire half as the latter struggled to figure out how to play for a tie without playing for a tie. They only managed two blocked shots from Enner Valencia in the first half.
But then Ecuador made two changes at half-time, being much more on the front foot, Moises Caicedo equalized after a corner and took advantage of Senegal having a man on the line to just loaf around behind the field and get the first header after a corner to bury the second ball.
And that’s where that balance, that heart-to-ankle feeling comes in. Because while Kalidou Koulibaly was trying to figure out how to play the rest of the game, Kalidou Koulibaly scored another second ball from a corner. a real captain’s goal that he shot into the net.
And that’s what’s special about the World Cup, because it’s the only tournament that can swing you from ecstasy to despair or the other way at a moment like this. Ecuador was clearly in shock and never really had it. In a way, it’s worse than persevering and giving up at the last minute. By only being able to glimpse the walkthrough for only two minutes and having it snatched away before they could even see the full shape of it, it put them in a kind of daze. They only had three shots after going behind and never looked like they would tie it. For two tremendous events that evoke opposite emotions to happen together so quickly crippled her like anyone else. How do you deal with falling behind again when you haven’t even had time to come to terms with the new state of the game after the draw?
Senegal is fully valuable for progression as they next to nothing brought the Dutch to much for most of the game and completely wiped out Ecuador for the most part. They will be a challenge for England.
Holland 2 – 0 Qatar
This was a match that happened. The Dutch haven’t impressed in any of their games, but they didn’t have to be to finally put the time-wasting hosts out of their misery and ours. The second course that the Oranje stuck in was more than enough for this one.
United States 1 – 0 Iran
We obviously have a ton of these already.
England 3 – 0 Wales
This wasn’t much more of an event than the Holland-Qatar staff meeting and Wales weren’t really any more impressive than Qatar for the tournament. England were able to rotate their line-up a little early on and then a lot throughout the game. The first half was basically a dirge until England got bored in the second half and decided to let Marcus Rashford use his speed to scorch the Welsh defence.
goal of the day
Let’s praise the dead
Wales and Qatar – Oh they’ve got it! Wales and Qatar! You ate it! Too bad! You have it! Wales and Qatar! (that’s a little Sleater Kinney joke for all you lovely people).
Ecuador – They should have beaten The Dutch but couldn’t find a winner and momentarily brought their chins over the bar before crashing to the ground. They are likely to return as the majority of the squad was under 25 and Ecuador have been one of the hotbeds of development lately. But it’s a lesson that in a short tournament it’s better to win the games you dominate like they did against the Netherlands. With Qatar being so horrible, everyone got a free spot on the bingo card and everyone’s rehearsal was reduced to just two games. Quite simply, Ecuador didn’t score enough goals when they did almost everything else right.
IRAN — I’d love to land on Carlos Quieroz and land on his ass again, just like he did in AFCON, just like he did in African qualifiers, because he’s one of the last true writers of woe ball that’s like that a chore is watch. Hopefully more Quieroz-type nations will move away and try to play their way out of the group stages instead of just trying to save, save, save. But limited teams will always think this is the surest way to score points in a group stage and that’s why managers like Quieroz will still have jobs.
But we will miss the Iranian players who risked so much in this tournament. Her not selling her own anthem in the first game reportedly got hers Threatened families at home. They showed everyone the importance of sport in a society and gave more oxygen to the protests and movements at home that will hopefully bring about meaningful changes there. They have set their sights on far more than just trying to get Iran into the last 16 for the first time, which is more than enough pressure for any player. applause for them.
Did Alexi Lalas say something stupid?
He was definitely uncomfortable at half-time, claiming Iran “didn’t want any part of this game” given the way they sat back and tried to defend and created nothing. Makes you wonder if Lalas has ever watched Iran or a team led by Quieroz play. But would it make a difference if Lalas actually watches other games?
Also, his daily power ranking is a violation of the Geneva Convention.
Did VAR mess something up?
Boy, we sure thought it was going to be Shaq Moore’s handball or Carter-Vickers’ late penalty call, right? But both weren’t nearly worth a look, and thankfully we didn’t catch the one referee in the dressing room having a bad day and just wanting to screw up shit. phew
Did Qatar screw something up?
More stories by fans with rainbow clothing Getting arrested before finally releasing them, which only looks like doing it because all the security forces must know by now how that ends. They just want to bother the fans now.
One more thing?
THE FUCKING AMIS GO ON!!!!!!
