“I help students kick ass in law school” – Larry Lee
“I stayed sane and partied hard in law school”
For Larry Lee, law school wasn’t about hanging out all night with your nose deep in books.
“For many students, law school is three years of torture. But I was fortunate to have friends who left before me. They steered me in the right direction by showing me how to work smarter.”
“Though I edited the law journal, worked as a teaching assistant, tutored freshmen, and worked as a researcher for a few professors, I stayed sane and partied hard. Law school was not a constant, fearful process for me.”
Larry not only completed his law degree, he destroyed it. He graduated magna cum laude and received offers from top law firms.
Larry crushed law school. He was a successful lawyer for 9 years. That’s when the entrepreneurial spirit got hold of him.
“I graduated from law school and practiced for 9 years. One of the things I thought about was starting my own business. It didn’t necessarily have to be related to law, but I wanted to try something.”
“I chose to tutor law students because I did it in school and was good at it.”
“I tried to make a website in the past but it crashed and burned”
Eventually, Larry wanted to try something online to scale his tutoring.
“I found a business partner who had online businesses that taught LSAT and other law-related material. I thought this would be a good start. I had tried to build a website in the past but it just crashed and burned.”
“So I worked with this other guy to build a business. We have launched a beta product. It grew, but very slowly. Everyone was frustrated.”
“Over the course of two years, we made $30,000. That’s about $8,000 to $9,000 a year if we split the sales between the two of us.”
Larry would have done anything to have some roadmap to follow to get the business off the ground.
“As a child, I loved building model airplanes. The instructions out there on how to shop online felt like someone gave me a model to build with all the parts scattered, but no instructions. Not even a picture.”
“Zero to Launch made me realize it’s okay to be myself”
Larry found out about Zero to Launch through Ramit Sethi’s email list.
“Earn1K helped me create the framework I needed to start my tutoring business. Ramit was so specific on everything from validating your idea to the exact words to use to target your first 3 paying customers. Everything worked for me. So it was easy to trust everything he said when promoting Zero to launch.”
Not only did Zero to Launch give Larry the roadmap he needed to finally get his business back on track, it made him realize that it’s okay to be yourself and have fun.
“I’ve learned that it’s okay to show my true personality. I once heard Johnny Carson quote, “It only works if you’re yourself.” That’s what I’m trying to achieve with my online business. I curse, I make the kind of jokes I would make with friends.”
You wouldn’t expect this kind of content on a legal website.
“I like to tell the truth and am entertaining. My vigilante approach is similar to what I think about law school. If you do what the professors tell you, you’re dead in the water. It’s better to find your own way. Focus on the few things that get you top marks. And my students are all A+ students.”
Zero to Launch also has some vault material on how to deal with haters online. This helped Larry deal with the fire that came with his over-the-top style.
“People email me and say, ‘Why are you cursing?’ I think these hate emails are proof that my site is not boring. If you don’t get comments and feedback, it means you’re not interesting enough for anyone to respond.”
Larry also gets personal on his page:
In addition to his jokes, Larry also tells personal stories.
“I get a lot of high achievers who grew up with high expectations. So when I talk about pushy Asian parents and become a lawyer, people have a relationship.”
“I’m also very brutally honest and I’m not afraid to tell people, ‘Don’t go to law school.’ People have to realize what they’re getting themselves into.”
“It’s important to write for your audience. That was a big take on Zero to Launch.”
“In the first 10 months I made $86,800”
Zero to Launch gave Larry the blueprint he needed to follow to build a successful online business.
“I’ve focused on the few things that have produced the greatest results. In the first 10 months of 2016, I made $86,800. That’s almost five times what I did when I first tried my hand at business. And I did it in less than half the time.”
“I look forward to my kids throwing cereal at me and kicking my nuts”
But the money isn’t even the best part.
“My wife is Brazilian, so my children spend the summer there. For the first time I have hope that I can join them and have more freedom in my life.”
“I look forward to my kids throwing cereal at me and kicking my nuts every morning.”
Larry is attacked by his children.
“When I started I didn’t have a website, but now I have email funnels and an entire course.”
